the Holiday on DVD

the Holiday on DVD starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black.  Two desperate women, unhappy with their crumbling romantic lives, agree to house-swap during the Christmas holidays in the hope of rediscovering themselves in a different environment.  This “romantic-comedy” was certainly less comedic than I had hoped, though the arrival scenes of both Diaz in rural Surrey, England and Winslet in posh Los Angeles were quite good.  Most of the two-hour plus film shows people in bad and failing relationships and depressed or complaining about these failures.  Maybe it’s all the alcohol being consumed throughout.  Unrealistically, both women seem to fall in love at first sight with their male counterparts while still lamenting their old situations.  Eli Wallach, as Winslet’s new neighbor, steals the show with a wonderful performance as an aging screenwriter who quietly rebuilds her inner strength.  The additional “Making of” featurette focuses more on the personalities of the principal actors and director and less on the technical aspects of how the film was made as I would prefer.
