License to Wed on DVD

License to Wed on DVD.  Despite what the blurb from the Chicago Sun-Times says on the front of the packaging, this is not “Robin Williams at his best!”  However, this film, which stars John Krasinski (the Office) and Mandy Moore as a young couple eager to be married and Williams as the reverend whose marriage preparation course creates havoc in their relationship, is an adequate romantic comedy.  It’s a familiar formula of lovers and their love under stress, but it works once again (barely).  The script puts the perfect couple into unrealistically difficult situations which break up their happy pairing (other people’s pain is always good for a few laughs), but in the end, love brings them together once again (for the requisite happy ending).  Unfortunately, the script does not develop any of the supporting cast, Krasinski and Moore lack chemistry as a comedic duo and in Williams’ portrayal of the non-traditional clergyman, assisted by his young reverend-in-training, we see only glimpses of his mercurial brilliance.  The Choir Boy featurette is full of throwaway jokes the writers wanted to get into the movie, but couldn’t.
