We own the night on DVD

We own the night on DVD.  Another excellent movie involving the villains of choice these days: the Russian mob.  However, this film is much more about the emotional ties that bind a family than anything else.  It just so happens that father and son (Robert Duvall and Mark Wahlberg) are NYC policemen trying to bring the Russians down whereas the other son (Joaquin Phoenix) is trying to escape the family by working as the manager of a nightclub; one owned and frequented by the very men under attack.  This is certainly a multi-layered piece of work.  At its core is the evolution of Phoenix’s character as his comfortable world collapses around him and he has to choose sides when the Russians take out contracts on his brother and father.  Then there is the whole family dynamic between the father and two sons that also changes throughout the film.  Finally, there is the battle for the streets of the city between the cops and the drug dealers.  Each scene in the film has some combination of these three elements.  There is one minor plot problem during the scene when Phoenix confronts his Judas, but otherwise the storyline is quite good.  The bonus features are also excellent and informative, especially the one relating to the stunt scenes.
