Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium on DVD

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium on DVD. It is a shame that such a good cast and interesting characters were sabotaged by a poor basic plot and bland dialogue. Dustin Hoffman is in the title role, a 240-year-old owner of a magical toy store and Natalie Portman plays Molly Mahoney, a composer struggling to recognize the magic within herself which will release her music. Jason Bateman plays Henry Weston, an accountant brought in to make sense of the store’s records who struggles to see the magic in the toys. Zach Mills plays Eric Applebaum, a nine-year-old with an old soul who hangs out at the store and struggles to make friends. When Magorium decides that it’s time for him to die and leave the store to Molly, she feels unworthy of this gift and rejects it, making the store, a living organism, feel rejected as well and the magic disappears. It is up to Eric, with some help from Henry, to convince Molly that if she believes in the magic, then all will be well. These are relatively complex characters for a children’s movie, but the lynchpin part of the plot, Magorium’s death, is not well-explained.

Despite a lot of dark material, this is a comedy, but most of the laughs come from the visual or physical aspects of life in a magic toy store, not from witty dialogue, with the exception of Henry’s arrival at the emporium. The bonus features focus primarily on the cast and director and on the production of the enormous set. They were adequate enough, but I was surprised by the lack of one on the many visual effects in the film.
