Charlie Wilson’s War on DVD

Charlie Wilson’s War on DVD. What happens when you combine an entertaining true story with a quality director and screenwriter and a great cast? You get a fantastic movie. When this movie first came to theaters, The History Channel did an episode on Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson’s efforts to support the Afgans as they battled the Soviet army, which invaded their country in 1979. If you get a chance to see the documentary, by all means do so. But if all you see is the Hollywood version, then you won’t be disappointed either. It describes how Wilson, CIA operative Gust Avrakotos and Houston philanthropist Joanne Herring worked together to get Congress, Isreal, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan to supply weapons to the Afghan Mujahideen. Each member of the trio, portrayed respectively by Tom Hanks, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julia Roberts, is a complex, slightly flawed, but nonetheless engaging character. Academy Award winning director Mike Nichols and Emmy winning writer Aaron Sorkin guide the actors and give them funny and poignant dialogue as they display their characters’ abilities to sway American politicians and entrenched Middle Eastern enemies to this cause.
